Re: Aligned Self

Bernard,

I would like to add something to your comments about the Swish to our Brazilian
friend.

<The name is swish, it's an usual NLP technique to give up an habit. It works at
the behavior level and can't have any effect at the identity or spiritual level,
can't it ? >

In my experience, while the Swish is directed towards behavioural changes, it
achieves them by using the leverage of an enhanced self-image, the image of
already being the kind of person for whom this behaviour would be quite normal
and natural. To imagine that, they have for a while to imagine being that kind
of person. I have found that often people have considerable difficulties giving
themselves permission to create such a representation, and it involves them
opening up space for some new ways of conceiving their identity. While I can't
be sure that this leads to lasting change at the identity level, it certainly
can open a window of possibility in their wall of limitations in a very
beautiful way . . . It redeemed the swish for me from Bandlerian visual games to
a technique of some profundity.

By the way, Bernard, due to prolonged absence from Europe from mid December, I
may withdraw from this group at least for some while. I would like to say how
much I've appreciated your care and commitment to bringing this little forum to
life and nurturing it along. I hope it is meeting your hopes and expectations.
It is in what I would like to think of as the true spirit of NLP.

Peter
