Re: Photoreading - ordering

Hi all,

I don't want to seem to commit an act of herecy, but since there has
been so much talk of science lately that I can't hold myself back any
longer. I've got a question:

Has anybody seen or heard of an independent, objective scientific (with
statistics, control groups, etc.) study of the Photoreading method as
taught by mr. Paul Scheele?

I must say I'm especially sceptical to the effectiveness of step 3
"Photoread", which is the special step where one is to enter a "state
of accelerated learning". Paul Scheele says himself in a tape that
one enters a state of "unconscious learning" which is supposed to be
more effective than the "conscious" one. One enters a light state of
trance and flips through the book. The way it has been presented, it
seems to me that it turns up side down the idea of first learning conciously
and then, after practice, knowing unconciously. According to Scheele,
by entering some sort of "unconcious state" one should get to know the
content of a book immediately (helping the "unconsciousness" only by
flipping through the book). Somebody less careful with words than me
might have called this a con.

The other steps in the process seem to me like possibly nice ways of
organizing one's reading, but nothing that could possibly promise any
"miracle cures".

The ideas around Photoreading, are, however, not without interest.
They certainly stimulate thought and might lead to suggestions of more
techniques of reading more effectively. It's the claims of its success
that are astonishing. Before I believe in them (and pay for a course
in Photoreading) I would like to have them validated in a scientific way.

I think the Photoreading ideas (apparently inspired by NLP) have
somewhat stepped outside the normally careful way in which trainers in
the NLP community make claims about how things work. The Photoreading
method could for instance have been presented as a way of organizing
one's reading in a more effective way. Period. It is the exeptional
claims that makes it a target of scepticism.

 Kind Regards,

 Karl Kirsten
