Greg,
you are absolutely right that NLP is very good at
helping people get what they want. Although it is my belief
having seen many serious phobias, allergies, physiological
and psychological traumas, such as rheumatoid arthiritis
helped (cured?) that you may be being a little unfair in
your assessment of it's(NLP) ability to "cure" things.
Whether NLP was "designed" to do anything is open to conjecture.
My reading (books) and metaphorically of NLP is that it has
developed from a basis of modelling "experts" in the field
of psychotherapy (Erickson, Satir, Perls et al) into something
which can now be applied to virtually any field and is only
limited by the skill and imagination of the practitioner.
Areas such as business, health, sport are in my opinion those
areas where NLP is being used to great effect.
