I think a healthy dose of cynicism is necessary, and understanding the
sales process helps too.

It is MOST important to avoid being greedy. That is the one thing that
all scams plug into. Train yourself so that your greed triggers your
caution. The best idea I have ever had was to choose my buying strategy.

My strategy over things that are important or expensive is this

1) Investigate the market place, to get an idea of what is available,
what the issues and trade offs are and how much I can expect to pay for
what. Danger - DO NOT BUY NOW. You are after information about the
product to become a wise buyer, not buying at this point.

2) Come home and write down what I am trying to accomplish. Let is stew
for a while. Talk to friends, take advice.

3) Decide what I want to buy, how much I am prepared to pay for it.

4) Stick to your plan when you buy. If what you want is not available,
you can always continue looking. However, if the first person has
something that fits your requirements, buy it.

5) It is now bought. Enjoy the purchase. If you come across a "might
have been better", it is too late. So don't notice.

For regular things, I build up a relationship and knowledge of a
supplier.

I still get ripped off occasionally. Who doesn't? But my greed has been
involved on all but one occasion.
