  You are taking this stuff way to literally.  Milton said several times
that there were many different reasons behind the tasks he gave his
patients.  One reason was to show the patient who was in charge(Milton).
Another reason could be for the patient to do something they didn't think
was possable.  A third reason is that the patient would climb to the top of
the mountain and find what they were looking for.
  You could send 10,000 people to the top of a mountain and they would come
back with 10,000 different experiences and even more learnings.
