Dear Jan,
In the 1970's, on one visit to Milton Erickson at his house in Phoenix
Arizona I saw the tree that you refer to. It is called a Boojum Tree and is
native to Mexico and Arizona. The tree referred to is in the Botanical
Gardens. The botanical name is Idri columnaris and the family name is
Fouquieracene. It looks like an upside down tree that appears like the
foliage is underground and the root system on top. The mountain that you
refer to is called Squaw Peak and actually is more like a big hill.
Milton sent people to the two places mostly because he liked to play tourist
guide, but sometimes as an education. What they usually learned was what
they needed to know.
