Interesting question. Especially when you consider it within
the context of linguistics.
When writing in _The Origin of Consciousness in the Break-
down of the Bicameral Mind_ about the use of "analogs" in
the human thinking process, Julian Jaynes broke down the
concept of **metaphor** into two parts: the *metaphier* and
the *metaphrand.
The metaphier is any analog (word or concept) which we
ascribe to a distinct object of our perception.
The metaphrand is the object "itself."
Speaking metaphysically, if you remove human perception
from the equation you are left with (and to also venture an
answer to Loren's incisive question) ...
